As part of its National Disability Employment Awareness Month activities, Brevard Achievement Center presents the inaugural E2A (Employ, Empower: Achieve) Community Awards. The E2A Awards honors individuals and organizations across Brevard for creating opportunities that help persons with disabilities to achieve personal success. In addition to the Awards, the event will feature motivational funny man Brett Leake, a “sit-down” stand-up comic who uses humor as a problem-solving device. Brett has muscular dystrophy and is a stand-up wheelchair user. He was the first comedian with a physical disability to appear on NBC’s The Tonight Show. Jay Leno said, “He broke up the whole room. People realized here’s a man with a disability and he’s not gonna’ let it bother him.” Brett has also appeared on Entertainment Tonight, the American Comedy Awards and an hour-long comedy special aired on several public broadcasting stations. As a National Humor Treasure Award winner, Brett joins the ranks of, among others, Gilda Radner, Victor Borge, Sid Caesar, The Smothers Brothers, Art Buchwald, Steve Allen, Bob Newhart as well as Leno. The E2A Award categories include: Employ, Empower Awards: Recognizes organizations that create work opportunities in the community for people with disabilities Moving Forward Awards: Recognizes individuals and/or organizations that have made special effort to assist people with disabilities in gaining new skills Believe and Achieve Awards: Recognizes individuals with disabilities who have made significant personal strides in achieving success through their work or personal lives
