The Studios of Cocoa Beach announces the featured artist for the month of September, Elaine Rowgo of Palm Bay. Elaine is a master potter exploring the endless possibilities of clay. Her pieces explore volume, shape and textures, then she expands her palette with alternate forms of firing , applying glazes and underglazes . As the clay hardens she sculpts the form, impressing details and carving.
Elaine holds a degree in painting from Carnegie Mellon University and has always loved teaching. Over the years, she has taught classes and workshops at Foosaner Museum Education Center in Melbourne and taken workshops there as well. Her approach is to challenge students and let them discover the joy of playing in clay and challenging herself as she creates projects, instructions and samples for them.
Elaine says, “ I like to work in series and then revisit that series over the years. I am drawn to more organic shapes, nature and detail. But I admire clean lines and other forms as well. I maintain a home studio and other interests: family, gardening and photography. These other passions interweave into my work, even the cats and the lizards.”
One of Elaine’s ceramic carved, high fire bowls “Patina Carved Bowl” will be awarded to an attendee during the Studios’ Watercolor Exhibit opening on Friday, September 28,2018
Elaine Rowgo’s work can be seen daily at the Studios of Cocoa Beach, 165 Minuteman Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach.
